We gave it a few days of rest before we decided to take another brief roadtrip over to Great Sand Dunes National Park a couple of hours away from our house. We drove over during nap time and arrived in time to hike on the sand dunes a bit before having a picnic dinner and setting up a star watching spot. The boys (and Grandad... ok, and me) had been really wanting a spot to lay and see lots of stars, and Great Sand Dunes National Park is supposed to have a great sky for that. So we all bundled up and lay out on the dry creek bed for over an hour watching the stars, planes, satellites, and shooting stars. And after staying up so late, everyone slept all the way home which made for a quiet road trip this time!
After the road trip to California, we learned that the kids really hit a wall around 6 hours in the car a day, so we decided to take three days going home as well, with a longer stop somewhere each day for a hike or to play. Day 1 we stopped at Edwards Air Force Base in California to visit with a friend of mine and her family (we lived in the same neighborhood in Ohio and we both moved over the summer). Emi and Luci are playmates of the boys and so they all got to play for a while and we joined them for lunch before heading on our way. Day 2 we made a stop in Flagstaff, AZ at Buffalo Park for a hike and to let the boys climb a bit. It was a beautiful little park outside of the city that broke up the day well. Day 3 we stopped at Red Rock Park outside of Gallup, NM and took a hike up a canyon which the boys had a lot of fun climbing through. Ruth is always just happy to be out of the car and very content to take everything in during our stops. And finally, at the end of Day 3, we made it home to sleep in our own beds!
