For the baby news: Baby is about 3 inches long this week and the size of a peach. And apparently Baby is developing vocal cords (all the better to cry with mom!).
Second trimester is just around the corner! We got to hear Baby's heartbeat at the doctor's office yesterday. It's strong and healthy! We also received another gift from family (check out Daddy)! In addition, the baby bump is coming (much to the excitement of my co-workers). Other than that, Mom and Dad have just been working, working, working.

Baby Rodgers is already getting spoiled! As can be seen above, Baby is already being gifted quite the wardrobe and cute toys from the grandparents and Aunt Jen and Uncle Jonathan! Though for the moment I think Mom is probably having the most fun getting to look at them all! (I mean really, who can handle all these adorable owls?!) Thank you!
While Dad and Mom did not spend any money on Baby yet, we did finalize our registry this week. For all parties interested, it can be found here. Additionally, Matt and I went and explored a small, but very pretty park along Lake Michigan called Grant Park. It has a beautiful ravine with a path that crosses many bridges as you follow the ravine out to the lake. We decided it would be a nice place to walk Baby Rodgers out of the womb someday after Baby is born. As far as Baby Rodgers news goes, Baby must be growing, as my stomach expands slowly but surely. Baby should be about 2.5 inches long, weigh 1/2 ounce, and be about the size of a large plum. Most of babies systems are already hard at work, including the bone marrow making white blood cells so that Baby can be strong and healthy! Hello Baby! We had our first ultrasound today with Baby moving! And boy did Baby move! Baby waved and kicked; it was hard to believe Baby is still only 2 inches long with how much activity is going on. The ultrasound confirmed that Baby is indeed on track to be due around April 7th and that Baby has a healthy heart beat of 176 BPM. Baby is apparently also very active judging by the amount of movement going on (I think Baby is going to be a morning person like me, so watch out Dad!). And according to my reading, Baby should be developing hair follicles, finger and toe nail beds, and has almost fully formed ears. Not to mention a fully formed tongue in his or her mouth!
As far as the every day life of Mom and Dad - nothing much to report other than we're both hard at work, and have quickly settled into the routines of football season. We're also enjoying the cooler weather that has descended on us and have celebrated by grilling out a couple of times a week. I suppose the big news is that we are finally sharing our baby news with friends and family. Lots of phone calls and excitement! We're so excited to share this journey with all of you! 10 weeks and 1/4 of the way to meeting our bundle of joy! Baby and I spent the week in 3rd grade, getting to know our new students (though they have not idea, yet, that Baby is sitting in on class). It looks like we'll have our challenges, just like every year, but hopefully we'll start to settle in with the start of a full week of school. To celebrate making it through the first week of school, and to quench Mom's craving for Mexican, Matt and I did meet up with some friends of ours for a dinner out on Friday night. Matt and I got to watch their little one with fascination, realizing that in less than 7 months, we'll have one of our own! Following that though, the weekend was a bit dull, as Saturday was spent working for both Mom and Dad, and Sunday involved catching up on yard work, house work, and laundry. The one bright side for Dad was the start of football season, which he is enthusiastically ready to share with Baby. I think we can reasonable predict Dad and Baby pictures watching football together next year (awww!). As for the weekly Baby update, Baby should be about 1.5 inches long (roughly the size of a prune). Baby is growing bones and cartilage, as well as forming knees and ankles on his or her legs. Additionally, Baby has a functioning stomach and kidneys, as well as moving arms! Finally, Baby is already forming teeth under his or her gums. In just a week, we will get to see Baby in another ultrasound to confirm just one Baby Rodgers - just to make sure. So we'll get another look at just how big Baby Rodgers has gotten, which I am very excited about! As for Mom, I've has minor bouts of nausea on the weekends, but have thankfully felt great during the week And aside from craving Mexican, and some soreness, have not felt any different from pre-pregnancy :) With school starting, well, today, Baby and I have been spending a lot of time at school getting things ready, attending staff meetings, and meeting our students for the year at "Back to School Night". Just like every other year, I anticipate some challenges for my new class, but hopefully it'll be a good year! Dad was busy all week starting his medicine rotation, so we've been learning a lot about what being a hospitalist is all about! As a family, we traveled to Spring Green, WI (west of Madison), had a picnic, and attended "Much Ado about Nothing" on Sunday with some of the couples in our Bible study. We had never seen it before, but it proved to be a wonderfully funny Shakespeare play with a (you won't believe it) happy ending!
Back to Mom and Baby: Additional changes seem to be occurring with hormone levels, as much of Saturday and part of Sunday was spent resting on the couch feeling like I had motion sickness. But that just means that Baby is busy growing and changing! This week Baby should be about an inch long and the size of a green olive. Baby is developing muscles and the heartbeat is getting stronger and louder. Hopefully next visit we'll be able to hear it! |
