In developmental news, Ezra has started to fall into the eat, play, sleep cycle (rather than just the eat and sleep cycle of a newborn). He likes to lay on his back and bat toys around or kick his piano to make it play. He is not a fan of belly time and shows no interest in trying to roll yet. He does like to be talked to though! Micah has taken to ONLY playing with trucks and trains (guess we can clean out the playroom.... just kidding!) and mostly reads about trucks and trains too. And he likes to apply his reading to his play by quoting lines from his favorite books while playing. His trucks get stuck in the mud, just like "The Little Blue Truck" and his trains go "chug, chug, puff puff" from "The Little Engine that Could". His other favorite past-time is protesting naps by playing in his crib instead of sleeping. Of course, for Mom and Dad, listening to him talk to himself while playing is VERY entertaining. We get sung a lot of songs and hear a lot of Micah conversations through the monitor!
Well we've been home for about 10 days from all of our travels, and we've settled back into our home routine. The mornings are our big chunk of time to go do stuff, so I took the boys to the Discovery Museum one morning, we played in the snow one morning (well, Micah and I did), and we went out shopping another morning. And Micah got to go on a Daddy-Son adventure to the trampoline park on Daddy's day off! We also just stay home and play, which basically involves playing with trucks, tractors, and trains, whether you want to or not. Micah did give Ezra a check-up one day, and Ezra was a trooper for his shot ;) And when Daddy gets off work early, we go for hikes in the rain before the thunderstorms move in! Yesterday, we even got to host visitors from Indy, our friend Amber and her two kids came to see us! Ezra got excited to see someone else his size, and Micah was equally excited to have two babies to hug! Poor James didn't know what he was getting himself into! Of course the boys favorite part of the day seems to be when Daddy gets home (ok, let's be real, that's my favorite time too... back-up help!).

Because we love to travel so much (or maybe because I am crazy) I had decided to travel to Newburgh a few days after our vacation to attend a friend's wedding shower and to see family too. Since Matt was working, the little boys and I had our first travel adventure together 2 versus 1.... and they were amazing for their Mama! Both on the trip there and the trip home they were both pretty content to nap and play (I purposefully travel during nap time for Micah so that he will sleep) with just one stop in the middle to nurse Ezra and give Micah a snack.
Once in Newburgh, Ezra and I attended the shower and Micah got to nap and hang out with Grandma and Grandpa. The boys also got to have a big family dinner and pose for a bunch of pictures with everyone. Ezra got to meet Uncle Trent, Kelsey, Great Uncle Jim, and Great Grammy for the first time too! In the midst of all of our travels, Ezra turned one month old! He is starting to smile and wake up for longer periods to play and socialize. He is definitely growing and is sleeping for four hour chunks at night some. He also continues to be loved by his big brother... who sometimes doesn't realize that Ezra is quite a bit smaller than him. We're working on it and are just gratefully Micah is so eager to include his brother and care for him. Micah is also quickly approaching two and continuing to reach more milestones for himself. He is talking in complete sentences some of the time, running pretty fast now, and absolutely loves trucks and trains (and that's about it... we play with trucks and trains and read books about them, and watch Thomas the Train, and talk about trucks and trains... you get the idea). Both boys make us smile and laugh with their ever developing personalities! Once we got settled, we took the boys on some adventures around Steamboat Springs. On Friday, we all rode a large lift called the Gondola up to a lodge midway up the mountain to have lunch together before sending the big boys off to ski/snowboard. Jack and Micah had fun trying out the snowboard with Uncle Jon before we headed back down the mountain. On Saturday, everyone went tubing together. Micah barely cracked a smile the whole time, but wanted to keep tubing, so we're pretty sure he had fun. He tends to be pretty serious for new experiences plus he was wearing sunglasses for the first time (which were adorable). Ezra was the only one who didn't tube at all, preferring to stay safely tucked in the building sleeping. On Sunday we explored the town, visited a nature center, and found a herd of elk to spy on.
Monday brought the last full day of our stay. We took the boys on a walk, started packing (let's just say that cleaning a house after 4 small boys have taken over is no small feat ;) ), and tried to take some pictures of all the cousins together. Let's just say that taking a picture of 4 boys ages 3 and under went about as well as it sounds it would go... On Tuesday we all had to say goodbye and board our flights back home. We'll definitely need to do more of these family trips next time; hopefully Alex can come along too! Our vacation adventure began at 3:30 AM loading the boys into the car to drive to the airport. With no direct flights to the tiny airport at Steamboat Springs we had to fly from Dayton to Atlanta and then to Steamboat Springs, CO. I admit it, I was feeling pretty nervous about how this all was going to go. Micah had flown a few times, but always direct flights. And of course this was all new with Ezra. We had only bought two tickets, so it was likely we were going to be holding both boys. My plan was to talk to the desk before each flight and see if we could wrangle an extra seat, but there were certainly no guarantees there. Fortunately, Delta proved to be an excellent company to work with, and were were able to get an extra seat on both flights out. That was a huge relief because we were able to install Micah's car seat and he took a nap in there. Both boys were absolute rock stars for the flights (90 minutes and 4 hours). Ezra slept and ate, and Micah played and slept. Micah LOVED watching all the planes and airport vehicles do their thing whenever we were sitting at the airport, so that was easy entertainment for the layover. We made it to Steamboat Springs just as Ezra had had about enough and was starting to fuss.
The first couple of days were spent settling in, exploring the house we rented and the nearby parks, checking out the town, and skiing/snowboarding (for Matt, Grandad, and Uncle Jon). The cousins absolutely loved the house we stayed in. The multi-levels proved a great climbing feat for the stair-lovers and the giant floor pillow/couch was a huge hit for jumping on. The boys spent many hours playing trains, reading books, and chasing each other around. Ezra was loved on quite a bit, but spent his nap times on the couch to prevent being trampled by his cousins - much safer there! |
